Petrol prices have increased by Rs 3.47, reaching Rs 256.13 per liter, while high-speed diesel has gone up by Rs 2.61, now costing Rs 260.95 per liter. The Ministry of Finance has issued a notification confirming that these prices will take effect at midnight.
Just two weeks earlier, on December 31, the government raised petrol prices by 56 paisas, setting the new rate at Rs 252.66 per liter. High-speed diesel also saw an increase of Rs 2.96, bringing its price to Rs 258.34 per liter.

The government’s inability to lower the petroleum levy has contributed to a substantial rise in fuel prices, which have surged by Rs 12.14 per liter over the past month and a half. Since October 16, high-speed diesel prices have risen by Rs 12.14 per liter, while petrol has increased by Rs 5.07 per liter.
Sources reveal that the government could have opted to reduce the levy to mitigate price hikes; however, restrictions from the IMF program have hindered those efforts.
